Managing pressure as water heats and expands
Water expands as it is heated. In a closed plumbing system, that added volume can increase pressure because the water cannot move back into the public supply. A properly sized thermal expansion tank provides an air-cushioned space that can accept the temporary increase in water volume.
For this Lynn Haven project, the expansion tank was installed above the storage water heater and connected to the cold-water piping. The completed photo documents the blue tank, copper connections, isolation valves, and water-heater installation in the mechanical area.
The installed tank gives expanding heated water a place to move, helping the closed plumbing system manage normal pressure changes.
Added protection for the water heater and plumbing system
Managing thermal expansion can help reduce pressure stress on the water heater, pipes, fittings, fixtures, and temperature-and-pressure relief valve. The tank must be selected, supported, charged, and installed for the specific plumbing conditions to perform as intended.
An expansion tank does not replace the water heater’s required temperature-and-pressure relief valve. Both components serve different purposes, and the relief valve must remain properly installed and unobstructed according to the equipment instructions and applicable requirements.
Water heater plumbing service throughout Lynn Haven
A Superior Mechanical provides water heater installation, repair, maintenance, and related plumbing service throughout Lynn Haven and Bay County. Our licensed plumbers can evaluate pressure concerns, relief-valve discharge, expansion-tank condition, piping connections, and the water heater as one connected system.
Intermittent relief-valve discharge, pressure fluctuations, visible leaks, a waterlogged expansion tank, or plumbing noise can be reasons to schedule an evaluation. The correct repair depends on measured pressure and the condition of the installed equipment.
